How to Bring Art Into Your Life

You don’t have to be a professional artist to make creativity a part of your everyday life. Whether you’re just starting out or simply want to reconnect with your creative side, there are so many simple ways to bring art into your routine. Even a few minutes a day can make a difference, it’s about forming habits, not perfection.

Here are a few ways to start:

1. Do It Every Day

Carve out a little time each day for your craft. It doesn’t have to be long, even ten minutes can be enough to unwind and create something just for you. If you feel like you don’t have the time, try pairing it with something you already do. My grandma used to knit while watching TV and made hundreds of scarves over the years simply because it became part of her daily routine. Small, consistent effort adds up!

2. Don’t Put Your Materials Away

It’s so easy to stash your art supplies in a cupboard and forget about them. Artists (myself included!) can come up with endless excuses for why it’s not the right time to start. But when your materials are visible and easy to grab, you’re far more likely to actually use them. I’m lucky enough to have a studio, but even if all you have is a small desk or shelf where everything stays organized and accessible it can make a big difference.

3. Start Small, Sometimes Literally!

When I’m feeling stuck, I’ll pull out a tiny canvas, a shell to paint on, or my mini sketchbook. Starting small takes the pressure off. Not everything needs to be a masterpiece. In fact, some of my favorite pieces have come from moments when I told myself I was just practicing.

4. Make a Community for Yourself

Art doesn’t have to be a solo pursuit. Take a class, I love signing up for workshops at the Art Students League of Denver. It’s such a wonderful way to meet other artists, push your techniques, and learn something new. There are also plenty of great online classes. You can build community through art events, local shows, or even online spaces where artists connect and share ideas.

5. Surround Yourself With Inspiration

Inspiration is everywhere if you look for it. I always feel rejuvenated after a trip to the mountains or a visit to the Denver Art Museum. Sometimes, a simple change of environment can spark your imagination. Even on social media, I’ve made it a point to follow artists whose work excites me, curating a feed that inspires.

Bringing art into your life doesn’t have to be overwhelming or time-consuming. It’s about showing up, even in small ways, and letting creativity find its way into your routine. Over time, those little moments of making can turn into something much bigger, and deeply fulfilling.
