The Story Behind My Art
I’m Colie Taylor, and I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember. I grew up taking after-school art classes with a close group of friends, where I fell in love with creating while learning strong foundational skills that continue to influence my work today. That early passion led me to the University of Colorado Boulder, where I majored in studio art, earned a minor in art history, and completed my teaching degree.
After graduating, I spent several years teaching 3rd grade before earning my Master’s in Literacy Instruction and later transitioning into a K–5 art teacher role. Teaching allowed me to stay connected to creativity, but it was also demanding, and I found myself carving out time to paint only on weekends and after school whenever possible. While I loved working with students, I constantly felt pulled toward my own art practice and knew I wanted more time and space to fully explore it.
After having my son, Briggs, I made the life-changing decision to step away from the classroom, become a full-time artist, and embrace my role as a stay-at-home mom. Choosing to pursue my art professionally felt like a natural progression of years spent building my practice alongside teaching.
Today, my work blends realistic painting with mixed media, collage, and text. I’m driven by a love of experimentation, layering, and storytelling. I’m always exploring new materials, taking creative risks, and pushing myself to grow. My subject matter is intentionally fluid and has evolved through multiple collections—from ski girls, cars, and western-inspired pieces to landscapes, florals, and portraits—each series reflecting a different season of inspiration. I especially love creating commissioned work and collaborating closely with clients to turn meaningful ideas, memories, and visions into one-of-a-kind works of art. Every piece I create is layered, intentional, and rooted in storytelling, reflecting my ongoing evolution as an artist.
What Inspires Me
Portraits
For a long time, I avoided painting people, thinking it would be too challenging. Once I shifted my mindset, portraits quickly became some of my favorite pieces to create. Whether it’s a commissioned painting of someone special or a portrait meant to inspire—like my Ski Women collection—each face tells its own story, full of energy and individuality.
Nature
I’ve always felt most alive in nature. I love to ski hike, and I grew up camping, so the outdoors has always been a source of peace and inspiration. I used to focus primarily on landscapes, and while my work has evolved, I still find ways to weave natural elements and textures into many of my pieces.
Community Outreach
Giving back is an important part of my work as an artist. Each year, I donate original artwork to auctions and fundraising events that support organizations dedicated to strengthening communities and uplifting young people. These contributions help raise critical funds for youth programs, creative education, and outreach initiatives that make a lasting difference.
One organization especially close to my heart is the Denver Children’s Foundation, whose mission aligns deeply with my belief in expanding access, opportunity, and support for children and families. Through these annual donations, I hope my art can play a small role in creating meaningful impact—turning creativity into connection, and expression into support for causes that matter.
