5 Healthy Habits I’ve Built as an Artist

Being an artist requires a lot of creative energy, but it also takes physical and mental energy. I’ve found that the better I take care of myself, the more inspired, focused, and productive I feel in the studio. Over time, I’ve developed a few healthy habits that have made a huge difference in both my art practice and my everyday life.

Here are five habits that keep me grounded, energized, and ready to create:

1. Working Out Every Day

Exercise has become one of the most important parts of my routine. I love to run, I even completed a half marathon in May! Running helps clear my mind and keeps my energy high throughout the day. As my schedule has shifted, the way I fit in workouts has looked different, but I’ve learned to adapt. I’ve loved using the free childcare centers at gyms like the YMCA and CHUZE, which allow me to carve out that time for myself and Briggs has a place to play with other kids. Even on the busiest days, getting my body moving makes me feel more centered and creative.

2. Cold Plunging

This is a newer habit, and one I’ve become completely addicted to. My husband invested in a cold plunge, and now we do it every morning. I like starting my day by doing the hardest thing first. It’s definitely a shock to the system, but it wakes me up instantly and gives me such a rush of energy and focus. It’s become part of our morning routine and sets the tone for a productive day.

3. Red Light Glasses At Night

At the end of the day, when we wind down and watch a show, I put on my red light glasses. This small change has made a huge impact on my sleep. The glasses help block blue and green light, and since I started using them, I’ve been able to fall asleep faster and get to bed earlier, something I’ve struggled with for years.

4. Following a Keto Diet

I switched to a keto diet earlier this year, and it’s been such a positive change. I no longer feel that heavy, lethargic afternoon slump, and my energy levels stay steady throughout the day. Meal prepping and keeping healthy ingredients stocked at home have made it easier to stick to this lifestyle. My husband and I actually started this diet together because of his health concerns, and doing it as a team has made it much more sustainable.

5. No Alcohol

Since having Briggs, I’ve had no desire to drink the way I used to. Hangovers completely zap my creativity, and I feel like if I have the privilege to follow my dream, I owe it to myself to stay focused and motivated. I used alcohol as a crutch for a long time, but when I finally gave it up, I realized how much better I felt mentally, physically, and emotionally. The clarity, energy, and sense of control I gained far outweighed any temporary fun I thought I was missing.

Taking care of myself has made me a better artist. These habits keep my energy up, my mind clear, and my creativity flowing. It’s not about being perfect — it’s about being intentional. The more I prioritize my health, the more present and inspired I feel in both my art and my life.
